Process Servers Giving Back: Torri's Legal Services Donates to Bright Pink

Torri's Legal Services Donates to Bright PinkWhen people think about the spookiest part of October, haunted houses, scary movies, and Halloween is generally what comes to mind, but as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October is also a reminder of the many women and men who are currently fighting breast cancer. According to statistics, 227,000 women have already been diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and nearly 40,000 have lost their lives to it. Many process servers take the time to host donation drives and find ways to give back to their communities. This week ServeNow recognizes Torri Schaffer of Torri’s Legal Services for doing her part to support breast cancer awareness.

“Last year I walked in the Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk,” she said with excitement. “It was great and I got a lot of donations, but this year I wanted to do something different.” Schaffer looked for a new donation recipient, and settled on Bright Pink, a national organization focused on providing education, resources, and support to women to promote breast and ovarian health. Their site has information on exams and assessing risk, and also helps high risk individuals develop early detection and prevention strategies.

“We found something that was just off the beaten track that really needs to be funded,” Schaffer said. As a unique way to collect donations, Schaffer decided that for every job sent to the company in October, Torri’s Legal Services would donate $1 to the organization. “I thought this would be something cool to do other than the norm,” she said. Regardless of the amount raised in the drive, an additional $500 will be donated directly from the company.

Schaffer is no stranger to doing her part to support her community, reserving nearly half of the company’s bi-monthy email blasts to promoting what’s happening locally. When asked why breast cancer, Schaffer replied, “I thought this was important. We all have daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and young females that we know, and we need to get the word out about breast cancer prevention.”

According to Bright Pink, current guidelines recommend that women 40 years of age and older have a yearly mammogram, but the organization also notes that women with an elevated risk or family history should develop a prevention plan with their doctor. Those with a family history should begin screening tests at age thirty or ten years earlier than the age of their youngest relative at their time of diagnosis. Though early detection of breast cancer is on the rise, education is a crucial component, as many women do not understand the risk factors and that not every type of breast cancer can be detected through a self exam.

Schaffer was excited to speak about Bright Pink and her company’s involvement in the cause. She closed by encouraging other process serving firms and members of the legal industry to find fun ways to give back to their communities. “Nothing feels better than giving,” she said. “And every little bit helps.”
