ALBANY, GA – Proposed legislation in Georgia known as House Bill 284 would require certified process servers to deliver all civil papers. Currently, many sheriff’s offices have deputies deliver many legal papers, including civil papers and criminal warrants. Some sheriff’s offices claim that the new law would increase spending for their offices significantly. Some sheriff’s offices have also claimed that deputies sometimes have to face dangerous situations when serving papers, something that process servers may not be prepared for.
