With "Mobilegeddon" and Google's latest update, there's been a lot of buzz about mobile-friendly websites over the past few months. But how can you tell if your site is mobile-friendly? The first step is running an analysis using the tool below.
Test: Is My Website Mobile Friendly?
Enter your website URL and click analyze to view your results.
You can test your website using the tool here.

What to Expect From Mobile-Friendly Test Results
We ran ServeNow.com through the test to see what Google's tool would say about our website. We then ran a test using a randomly selected, non-mobile-friendly website to see what the results would be. This was the result:
Test One: ServeNow.com
Test Two: Random Website
Google tells us that the text on this site is too small to read, the links are too close together, and we don't have a mobile viewport set. We are then prompted to answer whether we used a CMS, like Wordpress, to build the site, had someone build the site for us, or built it ourselves. Depending on our answer, we were led to a resource that would help us figure out how to make our existing website mobile-friendly.
You can view those recommendations here (we highly recommend running your own website through the test first):

As Google continues to shift focus toward mobile-friendliness and consumers rely increasingly on mobile search results, mobile-friendliness is no longer just about accessibility for mobile users. Google will now penalize you for not having a mobile-friendly site. "Mobilegeddon" and Google Updates
On April 21st, Google rolled out an update that changed how it organized mobile-friendly and non-mobile-friendly websites. The goal was to increase visibility of mobile-friendly sites, ranking companies with mobile-friendly websites above their competitors with non-mobile-friendly websites.
Here's how you were affected:
- Businesses that did not have mobile-friendly websites lost search traffic.
- Mobile rankings are now even more different than desktop rankings.
- Businesses that don't optimize their websites for mobile screens will see greater losses in search traffic through the next updates.
What Does Mobile-Friendly REALLY Mean?
Many people assume that being able to view their website on any mobile device qualifies as mobile-friendly. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
According to a research study conducted by Google and AnswerLab, here are some of the key elements of a mobile-friendly website:
- The mobile homepage should focus on connecting users to the content they’re looking for.
- Site search should help mobile users find what they're looking for in a hurry.
- Allow users to convert on their own terms by using call-to-action buttons, making existing information available, and lets users explore before committing.
- Make getting a quote, joining an email list, sending an email, or filling out a form as seamless as possible.
- Make sure your mobile version is usable!

Tracking Mobile Traffic Growth Over Time
In analyzing data for ServeNow.com, we've seen a massive, continuous shift toward mobile in the past 5 years. You can see this growth, starting from 2010, illustrated in the charts below.
While only 2.96% of our website traffic in 2010 was mobile, that number has only gone up, with 27.81% of our traffic this year coming from mobile and 4.55% coming from tablets. Now more than one-third of our traffic comes from portable devices. We only expect that number to continue to grow. In fact, thus far in August mobile and tablet traffic has accounted for 38% of our total traffic.
